Idea & Inspiration
For this draft audio story, I decided to tell my story in the sports management industry. I told this story through a narration with my voice being played over ambient sound. The sound was chosen based on an experience I’ve had with sports management. This story directly relates to my overall chosen course topic. At the start of the semester I chose to blog and create projects based on my path to professional career in this industry.
Design Process
I decided to use design principles that involved layering audio clips, piecing them together and changing volume levels. My idea and inspiration to do so came from audition tutorial examples. Some of the examples included voicing over other audio. More specifically I used the idea of self-recording ambient sounds as the background noise. I began the process by recording the narration using my voice memo on my smart phone. From there I chose to record the ambient sound while I was working for my athletic internship. I also recorded an interview with an athletic marketing director in the same industry I may be using this audio in my final story.
Technical Detail
Using Adobe Audition, I first downloaded these files to my computer and created a new multi-track session. From there I uploaded my recorded audio files to Adobe Audition. I placed the audio clips into the editor. I then pieced together the three separate clips I had for the ambient sound to insure they appear in one track. In the separate track, I placed my recorded narrative. I then lowered the decibel volume levels of the internship sound. I faded in the background sound at the beginning and faded the same audio out at the end of the track. To ensure that both clips were played at the same time I placed both clips at the very beginning of each track. I then exported the clip as a multitrack mix down session. One of the technical challenges I encountered was ensuring that the volume of the background ambient sound was quieter than the narration but loud enough that listeners are able to hear what is going on. I found that replaying the tracks separately and following the decibel meter helped to get the right volume.
HI Felicia,
I love the story that you chose to tell for your audition project. It’s awesome that you can open up and talk about your personal experiences for your project! Something I noticed that you could improve on was that there’s a lot of background noise when you were narrating which made it a little hard to focus on what you were saying, maybe re-record those parts so that the listener can focus on your voice. There is also a lot of fuzz and static in the recordings, try using another device such as your phone to record in a quiet room! Another suggestion I have is to use the razor tool at the beginning and end of your audio because you can hear the moments of silence. I really like the story and the start that you have! I look forward to seeing your final draft!

Very cool story Felicia! I am also studying Sport Management and looking to minor in it, and I am also looking for a career after college that has to do with sports. I thought that your audio story was very interesting that you shared. A critical suggestion that I have for you is maybe lowering the background sound, so we can hear your voice better. Also, maybe changing the background sound to something other than people behind you. It made listening to your narration sort of distracting. Where I think your story is already strong is your narration and your clear voice. I am not sure where you got the background sound from but make sure that it is not copyrighted if you got it online.

Hello Felicia,
Your audio story was super interesting, and I found myself relating to the first part of it since I also tried something my freshman year that I very quickly realized was not for me. I think that’s one of the strong points in your story, that it is very relatable, which makes it pleasant to listen to. I would say that the other thing you did well is speaking with a clear sense of direction. What I mean by that is that it seems like you are very confident in what you are saying, and makes the whole thing sound well put together. The one criticism I do have is the background noise is pretty distracting and does make it difficult to hear and sometimes understand you, I would suggest finding somewhere quiet to record. Keep up the good work!

After reviewing the feedback from my peers, I was able to get a clearer picture of what my final audio story will be. Overall the comments consisted of recommendations to eliminate the background noise. The reasons for these suggestions were due to the fact that the background ambient sound overpowered my narration. I plan to definitely use this criticism to transform my final project. I have decided that instead I will use audio footage that I captured in interview of a professional in this industry. I will instead introduce the interview clip and piece together the tracks to tell one story rather than my personal journey. I will record the introduction and later piece together both audio clips to make one track. I plan on using the razor tool to eliminate pauses. From there I will be able to adjust sound quality and volume decibel levels. My hope for the end product is to create an interview story.
